A-49 Sideline Concussion Assessment Tool symptoms predict poorer mental health outcomes in college athletes

Abstract Purpose: Assessment of emotional functioning is essential in sports-related concussion (SRC) management. This study investigated the prediction mental health outcomes from SCAT-3 Symptom Scale. Methods: Canadian university athletes who compete contact sports participated a large-scale (Active Rehabilitation). A total 235 participants (males = 67%) completed Brief Inventory (BSI), Quality Life Scale (QOLS), and Sideline Concussion Tool, 3rd edition (SCAT). Step-wise regression analysis using demographic variables (gender, age, history Learning Disability, ADHD, diagnosis psychiatric condition) psychological symptoms SCAT were used as predictors for BSI (Depression Anxiety) QOLS Anxiety). Results: Regression revealed female gender, previous Nervousness (SCAT) significantly predicted higher scores on Depression subscales (R2 0.21, F1,231 20.3, p < 0.001) 18.0, 0.001). Female diagnosis, Irritability both Anxiety 0.23, F1,230 16.9, 0.26, 20.2, Contrary to other findings, was not predictive and/or (although there trend between number concussions symptom report). Conclusions: may capture heightened report with more robust scales measuring functioning. In contrast, did predict symptoms, finding contrary published literature.
